SFDPH Director's Hearing

A monthly hearing where the appointed Hearing Officer makes decisions about penalties for potential violations of the health code.

Meetings

Agenda

The San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH) Director's Hearing is a monthly hearing where decisions about fines, suspensions, and permit revocations are made for businesses and property owners who may be in violation of the San Francisco Health Code.

The appointed Hearing Officer hears testimony from DPH staff, the responsible parties, and other interested individuals. Staff first give a presentation about the case. The business or property owner, or their representative, then has an opportunity to present their case. Building tenants, neighbors, customers, and other members of the public may also provide comments.

Hearing outcomes

After hearing the testimony the Hearing Officer may render a decision immediately or within 2 to 60 days, depending on the complexity of the case and the relevant code. Cases are heard regarding Housing and Vector Control, Tobacco Sales, Massage Establishment, Body Art, Food Programs, Cross Connection Control, Medical Cannabis Dispensaries, and other matters under the San Francisco Health Code. Permit decisions made at the Director's Hearing are appealable to the San Francisco Board of Appeals. Other fines and penalty decisions may be appealed at the San Francisco Superior Court.
