The Department of Public Health focuses on disease prevention and health promotion of communities throughout San Francisco. We work to achieve the vision of healthy people in healthy communities by performing the following functions:

  • Employ a systematic approach to identify the health conditions and needs of communities.

  • Determine priorities, and develop policies and programs that address the health conditions and needs of communities.

  • Assure that quality health resources and services are available to all San Francisco communities.

Environmental Health Inspectors inspect over 7,000 locations including restaurants, bars, markets, bakeries, pushcarts, stadium food facilities and any other facility that serves food to the public. Inspections reduce the number of food-related illnesses by providing information to the public.
