Sports, Dance, and Fitness During COVID-19

Last updated on June 15, 2021

Safer Return Together

On October 13, 2021, the San Francisco Health Officer revised Health Order C19-07y -- Safer Return Together to revise the universal face covering requirement for individuals in indoor public settings to include exemptions as of October 15 for stable groups that are 100% fully vaccinated in some controlled settings that meet certain health requirements. Also, the Order describes the heath and vaccination benchmarks by which the County, in coordination with other Bay Area jurisdictions, will lift the indoor universal face covering requirement. It also maintains face covering requirements in other settings such as public transit, health care facilities, homeless shelters, jails, and schools, consistent with federal and state rules. A Redline is available. C19-07y will continue until amended or rescinded by the Health Officer. Please see the FAQ for more information on C19-07y.

Note: On June 15, 2021, the California Blueprint for a Safer Economy was replaced by statewide COVID-19 guidance for certain settings. The San Francisco Health Officer's declaration of a health emergency arising from the pandemic will continue to be in effect.

Summary of changes since May 20, 2021

  • Effective June 15, SFDPH lifted local restrictions on sports, dance and group exercise. San Francisco no longer has separate requirements for sports, dance and fitness.
  • You must still follow any state rules sports and for face masks from the California Department of Public Health.
  • Youth teams and groups must also follow SFDPH's guidance for programs for children and youth.

Key Messages

COVID-19 spreads in respiratory droplets from people's breath. Exercising with other people is higher-risk because people breathe a lot more air when they are exercising. The most important ways to keep COVID-19 from spreading in sports, dance and exercise are:

  • Get vaccinated for COVID-19.
  • Exercise or dance outdoors as much as you can.
  • Stay home if you feel sick
  • If you are not fully vaccinated for COVID-19, stay 6 feet away from other people and wear a mask indoors.
  • Limit the number of people you exercise or dance with.
  • Protect yourself before and after exercise: carpooling, locker rooms, and team dinners have all led to COVID-19 outbreaks.
