I. Introduction and Overview

Step 1: Train Participants, Name the Issue, Choose an Area of Focus

What Is Health? — Small groups, lecture and discussion to help participants identify the four factors that affect health with environment as the factor with the most impact on populations.    

Naming the Issue — Activity to help participants analyze the root cause of an issue. Description of “Codes” (Step 1 of the CAM).

Globalization and Public Health — A series of puzzles and activities that puts public health in the context of globalization, analyzes how transnational corporations affect the health of local communities, and stimulates discussions for solutions.

Changing Our Reality — Activity to help participants identify the factors and experiences people would have in a healthy and safe society and some of the actions to get from the current reality to a more desirable future.

How CATs Work - Posterboard Activity — Outline of concrete CAM projects to show how the five steps in the CAM are implemented.

Step 2: Define, Design, and Do a Community Diagnosis


Asset Mapping vs. Needs Assessment — An activity that differentiates between a diagnosis that identifies strengths and capacities of a community and a needs assessment which does not.

Designing Your Diagnosis — Planning tools to help participants design their community diagnosis plan.

Step 3: Analyze the Results of the Community Diagnosis


Tips for Step Three — Ideas on different ways to analyze data from the community diagnosis.

Turning Numbers into Startling Statistics — An activity that helps participants use data from existing sources, identify the most relevant statistics, and present them in a visually compelling format.

Turning Diagnosis into Action — An activity that examines how one CAM project conducted their diagnosis in their community, analyzed their data, and presented their startling statistics.

Step 4: Select an Action or Activity and Implement


Actions for Health — Definition of the terms, "Action" and "Activity" (CAM outcomes). Card activity to help advocates understand the criteria for each and look at possible outcomes.
