Tobacco 21

Effective June 9, 2016, the sale of tobacco products is prohibited in San Francisco to those under 21 years old. There are no exceptions in the local law, including no exceptions for military personnel, even though the California Stop Tobacco Access to Kids Enforcement (CA STAKE) act allows that exception elsewhere in California.

SFDPH prepared a Tobacco 21 Notice suitable for printing and posting in businesses.

All tobacco establishments must post BOTH of the following signs at the tobacco products point of sale area:

San Francisco Blue Tobacco 21 Sign

Sale of Tobacco Prohibited to those under age 21, including military

Please Note: The State of California Yellow sign allows active military personnel to purchase tobacco products at 18 years of age in other counties, BUT in San Francisco, active military personnel must be at least 21 years of age to purchase tobacco products, so the San Francisco Blue sign must be posted alongside the state's Yellow sign.

State of California Yellow Tobacco 21 sign:

Sale of Tobacco Prohibited to those under age 21, except military most be at least age 18

Signage can be requested through the San Francisco Tobacco Free Project.
